Anyone weighing up your business can now ask an AI assistant about it and get a confident summary in seconds. That includes customers, candidates, partners and anyone considering an investment. The summary they receive is built from sources you may never have looked at, and it may name your competitors before it names you.

For founders preparing for a raise or an exit, and for investors building value across a portfolio, search and AI visibility has moved from a marketing metric into the commercial case for the business. This article explains why, what to check, and why the timing matters inside a hold period.

Key takeaways

  • Visibility in AI answers now shapes who makes the buyer’s shortlist, which feeds directly into pipeline and acquisition costs.
  • Brands cited in Google’s AI Overviews earned 35% higher organic click-through and 91% higher paid click-through than brands that were not cited (Seer Interactive, November 2025).
  • 85% of B2B software buyers think more highly of a vendor when an AI chatbot includes it in an answer (G2, April 2026).
  • Three questions, asked in four AI tools, give a quick read on where a business stands.
  • Because authority builds over 6 to 12 months, the best time to start is early in a hold period, well before an exit process.

If you have not yet checked whether AI assistants name your business at all, start with our guide: Is Your Business Invisible When Buyers Ask AI?

Why Does Search Visibility Belong in the Equity Story?

Demand comes from two places. Some of it is rented: paid search, paid social and sponsored placements that stop the day the budget stops. Some of it is owned: the organic visibility, reputation and third-party coverage that keep producing enquiries without a new invoice every month.

A business with a healthy share of owned demand is easier to forecast and less exposed to rising media costs. A business that depends on rented demand has a pipeline that is only as stable as its marketing budget. Investors understand that distinction instinctively. What has changed is that owned demand now depends on being named by AI assistants as well as ranking in Google.

The cost of being left out is measurable. Seer Interactive tracked 3,119 search terms across 42 organisations and found that, on queries showing an AI Overview, organic click-through fell 61% between June 2024 and September 2025, and paid click-through fell 68%. Brands cited inside the AI Overview did far better, with 35% higher organic click-through and 91% higher paid click-through than brands that were not cited. Being named improves the return on the paid budget too.

What Would an Acquirer or Investor See?

If we were assessing your business today, these are the three questions we would put to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode, several times each.

1. Is the company named for the questions its buyers ask?

Category questions such as “best [category] provider for mid-sized firms in the UK” show whether the business is on the shortlist when demand forms. Absence here points to a pipeline that relies heavily on outbound, referrals or paid media.

2. What does AI say when asked about the company by name?

A direct question tests whether the assistants describe the business accurately: what it sells, who it serves and what it is known for. Out-of-date positioning, a product that was retired years ago or confusion with a similarly named firm are all common, and all fixable.

3. Who is named instead?

The companies recommended in your place form the real competitive set from a buyer’s point of view. Investors often find that list differs from the one in the management presentation.

G2’s April 2026 research found that 85% of B2B software buyers think more highly of a vendor when an AI chatbot includes it in an answer. Visibility shapes perception as well as traffic.

How Does This Show Up in the Numbers?

Search and AI visibility rarely appears as its own line in a board pack, but it shapes several lines that do.

  • Customer acquisition cost. More owned demand reduces reliance on paid channels whose costs tend to rise over time.
  • Pipeline quality. Buyers who arrive having already read a clear answer about you tend to be further along and better informed.
  • Forecast confidence. Inbound that does not depend on a monthly media budget is easier to model and easier to defend in diligence.
  • Brand risk. Inaccurate or thin AI summaries can quietly undermine the positioning a management team presents.

When Should a PE-Backed Business Start?

Earlier than most expect. Technical fixes can land within weeks, but the authority that drives AI recommendations comes from content and earned coverage that compound over months. A realistic programme takes 6 to 12 months to show its full effect.

Inside a hold period, that timing matters. Work started in the first year has time to build a track record that can be shown, with data, well before an exit process. Work started six months before a sale tends to arrive too late to count.

For investors with several portfolio companies, there is a further advantage in running the same approach across the portfolio: one way of measuring visibility, one reporting format for the board, and lessons that carry from one company to the next.

How Remora Approaches It

Remora works with founders, CEOs and PE investors as part of the value-creation team. Our background in marketing due diligence means we look at search and AI visibility the way an investor would: as a driver of pipeline, acquisition cost and enterprise value.

Our SEO and AEO team combines technical SEO, human-led content supported by AI tools, and digital PR that earns coverage in the sources the assistants trust. We measure visibility across Google and the main AI assistants, and report it in commercial terms a board can act on. The results we are seeing for clients are strong, and we would rather walk you through them in a meeting, with the reporting in front of you, than put a percentage in a blog post you cannot check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SEO matter for a PE-backed B2B company?

Yes. Organic search and AI visibility are sources of owned demand that reduce dependence on paid channels and make the pipeline easier to forecast, both of which matter to the value of the business.

What is AI search visibility?

It is how often, and how accurately, a business is named when buyers ask AI assistants and AI search features questions in its category.

How quickly can AI visibility improve?

Technical improvements can land within weeks. A meaningful, lasting change usually takes 6 to 12 months because it depends on content and earned coverage that build over time.

Can one approach work across a portfolio?

Yes. A common measurement framework and reporting format across portfolio companies makes progress comparable and lets lessons from one business carry to the next.
